BIO

Hi! I’m Kyla Dunning, an artist based in Birmingham, AL. I create crocheted plushies and custom pieces, write music and poetry, and illustrate whatever moves me. My work centers on themes of love and nature, drawing inspiration from personal experiences and the different perspectives they offer. While the natural world heavily influences my art, I’m equally drawn to capturing the people in my life. Since beginning my creative journey, I’ve published a poetry book on Amazon, sold crocheted pieces internationally, and released a debut EP. I’m currently developing a snail mail club featuring my original art prints!

Kyla Dunning: Thoughts and reflections about the residency.

This place invokes a feeling that will never leave me. Not only is the beauty of the land inspirational, the warmth and hospitality of the owner matches the magic that surrounds the property. I applied for this opportunity to slow down and truly create something outside of what I do for work. I wanted to fully allow myself to be and create from a deeper place.  Even with what I already knew about MARS from my tour and the website, it exceeded my expectations. The physical space mirrored the mental state I found myself in, peaceful, expansive, and full of inspiration. I truly felt like a kid in a candy store.

Some of my favorite moments included the process of creating. My usual routine is often to crochet and be creative but what really stood out about this opportunity was breaking up the pressure I had begun to build on myself around creation. I am primarily a fiber artist, but painting became my main focus, and I allowed it to guide me in a way I hadn’t before. As a multidisciplinary artist, I felt free to create with whatever medium called to me in the moment. During my time at MARS, I designed a custom giant crocheted jellyfish (now in the artist cabin), wrote multiple poems inspired by walks along the trails, and created paintings that reflect my gratitude for the experience. I had the pleasure of markets, interviews, and performances being woven into my time at MARS which allowed me to share my work and build excitement for what’s next.

Beyond the art, the people made this experience even more meaningful. Joe MacGown was an incredible host, mentor, and source of inspiration throughout my residency. Many of my favorite moments would not have been possible without him and the support of the Del Rendon Foundation. I shared delicious dinners, received advice I will carry with me throughout my life, connected with people I otherwise never would have met, and a chance to sing my original song for a lovely audience of cows.

This residency gave me the time and support to express what I had been feeling for months. I left feeling rested, motivated, and with a deep sense of clarity about who I am as both a person and an artist. It allowed me to reconnect with the part of myself that loves to paint and tell stories, without pressure or expectation.

What I’m taking with me from MARS goes far beyond what was offered. I am leaving this place with inspiration, gratitude, a stronger understanding of myself as an artist, and a new friend that I am lucky to know.
