Comments about the Residency by Lawson King (2024)
At a time when I deeply needed space to heal and reconnect with my creative practice, the beauty and serenity of MARS MacGown provided exactly that. The natural surroundings were a constant source of inspiration and nourishment. The opportunity to step away from the distractions of daily life and immerse myself fully in my work was a gift. Equally meaningful was the opportunity to engage with the community of Starkville. MARS facilitated warm and thoughtful introductions, creating connections that extended beyond the artworld.
One of the highlights of my residency was the opportunity to have a pop up exhibition at the Idea Shop in Downtown Starkville. Sharing my work with a new audience in such a welcoming and enthusiastic setting was uplifting and energizing. The attendee’s genuine appreciation for art made for inspiring conversations and created a perfect culmination of my time there. This residency was much more than a space to create; it was a sanctuary and a bridge to new opportunities. The experiences and connections I gained at MARS MacGown have left a lasting impression on me as both an artist and an individual.
